DE: Dawn breaks over Ny Alesund, and we say a final good morning from the Arctic and what a beautiful morning it is. Crisp and still and -14C. We fly south today from Ny Alesund to Longyearbyen and then onto Oslo and then London. What a journey and thank you for being a part of it!

Digital Explorer: Today is the last day of Skype lessons from the Arctic this year and tomorrow we'll be travelling back to the UK. However, we have so many photographs and other media to share, that we'll keep this chat open and ongoing for the next two weeks or so.
DE: Good morning from Ny Alesund. It's going to be a cold one today. Here's the view over the UK Station this morning. Thermometer showing -18C and with the windchill factor that's going to feel more like -30C / -25F outside. Stay warm wherever you are...

We've had a few teachers from India on Arctic Live this year and I am just going to share a few photos of the Indian Research Station up here. It's a couple of buildings down from the UK Station...
The Indian station is currently closed and so no one I can get in touch with for you. Best to search online and see what you can find.

Digital Explorer: Good morning from Ny Alesund. It's definitely chillier today. With the windchill, the temperature is -15F / -25C, so lessons outside our going to be a little tougher today, but we'll still try to get all classes outside for at least a little while.

DE: Good morning from Arctic Live. It's a pleasant morning and the temperature is about -3C. We hope to get out back to the glacier today and hope that the route is passable.

The warm weather has made getting to the field site a little trickier. The frozen stream that we had been using as a route is now running with water and full of slush. Here a member of the team tests the ground before crossing with the skidoos.

As some of you will know from Skype calls, the research team are investigating the melt channels inside a glacier, near the UK Arctic Research Station here in Svalbard. To access these channels, the team must abseil 45 metres down this 'moulin', a water-worn shaft into the glacier. From here, they can explore the channels cutting through the ice.

DE: Good night from Arctic Live. The weather has turned colder again and the sleet has turned to whirling clouds of snow racing past in the snow. A day to be working inside at the UK Arctic Research Station and looking forward to waking up tomorrow. The sun may even make an appearance through the clouds!

Digital Explorer: Good morning from Arctic Live. We had a full day on fieldwork yesterday, so apologies for lack of updates. It's a dreich (good Scots word) Sunday up here in Ny Alesund. Just above freezing, windy and (rain) .

Not a good day for fieldwork with this kind of weather. Slush on the route up to the glacier and not a good day to be exploring stream channels inside a glacier. We're just sorting the photos and video from yesterday and will share over the next couple of days..

Digital Explorer: The weather has been truly horrible up here over the past 24 hours. The storm came through bearing warm and wet wind, with driving sleet and temperatures hovering around freezing. The resulting slush is just about frozen, making snow mobile travel tricky. We hope to be able to get out to the field today, but we may have to wait for the cold and dry weather to come back.
There were a couple of really great questions from students, that I didn't know the answer to, so having consulted with the team up here, here we go...
Digital Explorer: To what depths can a beluga whale dive?
Beluga whales typically dive to depths of 60-70 feet to find food, which is varied between fish, squid and octopus and shellfish. Greater depths down to over 2,000 feet have been recorded.
Digital Explorer: What is the coldest temperature that bacteria can survive?
We were talking about the importance of bacteria in binding nutrients together in the soil, but can they survive the cold of the Arctic? What we found out, was that bacteria can't reproduce at temperatures lower than -20C or -4F. This is why your domestic freezer is this cold as it stops the bacteria from growing on your food. Below these temperatures the bacteria go into a kind of suspended animation. This means that some bacteria can be stored in liquid nitrogen (-321F / -196C) and then can come back to life.

Digital Explorer (03:42): The issue it seems is potential strong cross winds on the runway at Ny Alesund, forecast to be getting above 35 knots. We're just waiting for the final preparations for the flight.

Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop (Digital Explorer): Really wonderful to speak to so many schools yesterday. A bit of a cloudy morning here in Svalbard. We're still suffering from a few connection issues after Tuesday's power cut, but doing our best! We'll be heading up to the research station in Ny Alesund tomorrow.

Digital Explorer: Good morning from #ArcticLive. Another beautiful morning, and we Skyped into the Microsoft Education E2 Conference in Budapest this morning. Even though there is more sun, the mornings in the valley are very much shaded by the steep sides of the fjord.

DE: It's been a pretty trick day out here on #ArcticLive. There was a power cut this morning due to ice build up on the electricity lines and communications were tricky to say the least. We look like we're in a good and stable place now, but huge fingers crossed. Look what I saw when I went out just now before bed...

DE: As the light fades, and researchers return on their snow mobiles, we sign off from a great first day on #ArcticLive this year. What an amazing day with Skype lessons with schools across the world. We started in India and Cyprus, then across to the Czech Republic, the UK and Ireland, before moving over to Bermuda and the USA. Amazing questions, great students and I am sure we spoke to some of the world's future polar scientists today.

Digital Explorer (DE): It's good night from the Arctic. We had a great day exploring virtual reality and drone filming with Francisco and Duran, two local filmmakers and hope to share the results with you soon. Here's a photo getting the drone up and running...

Digital Explorer (DE): To answer Manuela's question from yesterday... It's the Isfjorden you can see in the background of the filming photo, literally translated as Ice fjord or Ice inlet. This then connects to the Fram Strait, the body of water between Svalbard and Greenland that connects the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.
